Ready-to-wear and apparel in Türkiye broke its export record, totaling $8.8 billion between January and May, according to a report cited by Daily Sabah. According to data from the Turkish Exporters Assembly (TIM), Turkish exports increased by 15.2% in May compared to the same month of the previous year and amounted to 19 billion dollars. It was the highest export figure reached in May in the country's history.
In the January-May period of this year, exports increased by 20.4% compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 102.5 billion dollars. The annualized value of exports, on the other hand, reached $242.6 billion.
The ready-to-wear and apparel industry, which exported $1.3 billion in May 2021, reached $1.33 billion with a 3% increase in the same period this year.
The sector exported $8.8 billion in the January-May 2022 period, an increase of 15.8% compared to the same period in 2021.
About $906 million of the sector's exports last month were made from Istanbul. Northwest bursa province followed Istanbul with $112.1 million and western Izmir with $94.2 million.
Last month, the country with the largest export sales in the ready-to-wear clothing sector was Germany with $217 million. Germany was followed by Spain with $181 million and the United Kingdom with $135 million.
Looking at the groups of countries to which most exports were made last month, European Union countries ranked first with $817 million, other European countries with $179 million, followed by Middle Eastern countries with $105 million.
According to TIM data, the ready-to-wear and clothing industry, which exported to 174 countries and regions last month, received a 7.1% share of the country's total exports over the same period.

Guven Karaca says: "In the period January-March 2022 exports of leather goods and leather products from Türkiye increased by 27% compared to the same period of the previous year and reached 503 million US dollars, beating all the export records of the first three months. In particular, if we consider the footwear sector, the Turkish footwear and accessories industry reached a record export figure of over 1 billion dollars in 2021. In the first three months of 2022, the share of this product group in the total exported Turkish leather products reached 65.2%. During this period, $327.9 million was exported to the Turkish footwear industry. Footwear exports increased by 22.2% compared to the same period of the previous year. As an association, our goal for the Turkish leather goods and leather goods industry is to exceed $2 billion by the end of 2022."
The export exploit was preceded by a sharp increasein the volume of e-commerce across the fashion industry, which had increased by 69.2% in 2021 compared to the previous year, according to data compiled by the Anadolu Agency (AA).
More than 162,000 companies from all sectors in Türkiye first engaged in e-commerce activities last year. About 70% of purchases on the web were made through mobile apps.
It was a sign of great modernization that preceded the export data.
