Taiwan’s Economy Is Breaking Away From China’s

According to Taiwan’s Investment Commission, Taiwanese realized investment in China has plummeted, from U.S. $9 billion in 2017 to just U.S. $1.7 billion in 2022. As a consequence, China’s importance in Taiwan’s total outward foreign direct investment has diminished whereas other countries’ weight has increased.

Changing value chains with new types of tariff barriers

A South Korean group will invest $2.5 billion in solar manufacturing in the U.S. state of Georgia, to take advantage of tax incentives under the recently passed Inflation Reduction Act. The facilities could provide nearly a fifth of U.S. solar demand. The legislation has “changed the economics of clean-energy investment,” The Wall Street Journal wrote

The new energy map

Russia is expanding its gas pipeline to China, and the United States received its first Venezuelan oil exports in four years. Meanwhile, a hastily built terminal in Germany accepted its first shipment of U.S. gas. The Ukraine war has reshaped the global energy map, forcing Moscow to look east as Europe increasingly refuses its exports, and Washington to revive troubled relations with Caracas. Still, this energy diplomacy may have a short shelf life. Given China’s rapid investment in renewable energy, and the years-long build time of new gas pipelines, it may be that Moscow’s investment doesn’t pay off for long.

Beijing refocuses on economy

China will shift focus to boosting growth after years of COVID-19 restrictions. In particular, “expanding domestic demand” will play a significant role, the Center for China and Globalization, a Beijing-based think tank, said. The shift comes with much of China grappling with what appears to be a brutal COVID-19 surge: Though the authorities have acknowledged few fatalities, major cities’ health care facilities and morgues appear overwhelmed.
