Costs of China’s concrete diplomacy

Many major Chinese-backed infrastructure projects around the world are falling apart. China’s $1 trillion “Belt and Road” initiative stretches from Asia and Africa to Latin America, investing in hydroelectric dams, housing projects, and other critical infrastructure. Donors pledged more than $9 billion to help Pakistan rebuild after massive floods last year

The disaster, which left at least 1,700 people dead and pushed nine million into poverty, dealt a hammer blow to Pakistan’s already teetering economy. This week the country, which faces the prospect of defaulting on its debt, held talks with the International Monetary Fund to restart a stalled bailout program. Pakistan may also offer a terrifying model of climate disasters to come. “We are all — increasingly — at the mercy of forces of nature that do not respect borders,” its prime minister wrote in The Guardian.

Uzbekistan, the industrial potential of the Tashkent region

An extraordinary session of the Tashkent Regional Council of Deputies was held in Nurafshan. It was attended by the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev. This year, $94 million will be allocated to SMEs over two years. For the districts of Piskent, Boka, Bekobod and Okkurgan, the budget of the Entrepreneurship Support Fund has been increased to 75%. $22.5 million will go to infrastructure and $2.7 million to footwear, leather and textile projects. Annual Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) nearly doubled to $83 billion as 'Make in India' completed eight years

As the flagship government programme ‘Make in India’ completes eight years, foreign direct investment (FDI) inflow into the country rose to $83.6 billion in fiscal 2021-22 from $45.15 billion in 2014-2015. The current fiscal’s FDI target is $100 billion. FDI came from 101 countries and was invested across 31 states and union territories and 57 sectors.
