The Microsoft-backed chatbot has caused a frenzy in China, with Chinese tech giants like Baidu, Tencent, and Alibaba announcing their own alternatives, and stocks in Chinese AI companies soaring. It’s no surprise that Beijing is joining the bandwagon — the city is a major hub of China’s AI industry, writes Semafor’s Louise Matsakis. Its legendary Zhongguancun neighborhood is home to heavyweight research institutions like the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence, the latter of which Microsoft itself recently called a “leading player in this next wave of AI.”
