Shoe prices start the year at moderate levels

Shoe prices continue to fall and started the year at one of the lowest levels since the beginning of the inflationary escalation, well below the overall index. As such, over the past month, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the consumer price index (CPI) of shoes sold in our country rose 1.9 percent. This is a decrease of 0.1 percent from December 2023 and 3.2 percent from a year ago. If we look more closely at the data from the National Institute of Statistics, we find that men's shoes were the most inflationary, with an increase in the last month of 2.1 percent. This is followed by women's footwear, with a 1.9 percent increase. Infant and children's footwear prices, on the other hand, increased by 1.7 percent. Overall, the fashion industry, which includes the apparel and footwear subsectors, recorded a price growth of 2.5 percent in January 2024. The overall consumer price index was 3.4 percent.
