Covid, China in lockdown again

17 March 2022

The Sourcing Journal reports on further price increases and delays in logistics. Lockdowns across China have created new supply chain uncertainties, but one factor that’s become clear: shippers can expect a rise in rates once restrictions are lifted and operations resume.

“These new lockdowns have the potential to worsen disruptions significantly. We may see further price hikes and deeper delays in the days and weeks ahead,” riports the Sourcing Journal.

The reason is that in China there is the worst rise in infections since the beginning of the pandemic.

From Shenzhen to Changchun in a few hours the lockdowns multiply, the discovery of positive cases blocks the activity of entire hi-tech districts and events already underway.

Around 3,507 new locally transmitted Covid-19 infections have been reported in mainland China. A figure far from the numbers recorded in other nations, but still significant by the standards of the country, where a strict "zero-Covid" policy has been active since the beginning of the pandemic. Local authorities have taken strict measures to try to block the virus from running. After the technological hub of Shenzhen, due to the increase in infections, the lockdown was also imposed in the entire province of Jilin, which has 24 million inhabitants.

In addition, Hong Kong reports world’s highest death rate as zero covid strategy fails

Coronavirus infections are surging in Hong Kong as the city has reported the highest number of covid-19 deaths for population size in the world.

Previously a global model for covid containment, transmission of SARS-CoV-2 has soared as Hong Kong’s zero covid strategy has failed to contain the more contagious omicron variant. The city’s low vaccine coverage is also aiding transmission and leading to more fatalities, said epidemiologists.
