Nike foresees a series of countermeasures, including the railway and the expansion of the distribution network to improve the flow of arrivals and shipments, amid the logistical crisis and shortage of materials, due to the pandemic. Retail Dive informs that Nike has adopted a dedicated train between Los Angeles and Memphis which it calls the “sole train”. But it has also added regional warehouses in the US and Europe, and a thousand “collaborative robots” for sorting and packaging while many workers are in lockdown.
Annual revenues for the U.S. sports footwear market grew by about 20% compared to 2020, although growth slowed to an average figure in the fourth quarter due to poor execution, supply chain delays, the end of stimulus payments and the lack of news in the market, according to The NPD Group.

“Is there an end in sight to supply chain disruption?”, asks the Financial Times who denounces the depth of the global supply chain crisis, while already since June, 94% of companies involved in a Survey on Global Supply Chains conducted by Heules Hermes in the US, UK, France, Germany and Italy reports a Covid-19 induced disruption in their supply chains. A “serious interruption” for 1/5 of them, including highly digitized ones.
Slowing from their standard pace during the key holiday sales period, U.S. footwear imports increased 28.2% to 2 billion pairs year-to-date through November compared to the same period in 2020, according to the Department of Commerce’s (OTEXA) Office of Textiles & Apparel, following revenues of 30% year-over-year for the first 10 months of the year. Small shoe factories in India make up the largest slice of the industry but, according to moneycontrol (PK Krishnakumar Jan 04, 2022), footwear has become more expensive in the new year following an increase in the tax rate on goods and services and higher commodity prices. Manufacturers and retailers expect a decline in demand for footwear that could hurt their business.
