Data prepared by the Brazilian Footwear Industries Association (Abicalçados) indicate that, in the first two months of the year, 26.77 million pairs were shipped, which generated US$ 219.78 million, a decrease of 2.9% in volume and an increase of 5.1% in revenue compared to the same period last year. Segregating only the month of February, exports totaled 12.14 million pairs for US$ 101.85 million, decreases in both volume (-10.6%) and revenue (-5.6%) compared to February 2021.
The CEO of Abicalçados, Haroldo Ferreira, assesses that the drop registered last month is due to the reduction of shipments to the United States, the main destination for Brazilian footwear abroad, and the slowdown in the world economy. "Brazilian shipments to the United States have been declining since the second half of 2022, following a trend of general reduction in imports from that country,” he said. According to the executive, the North American market is going through a moment of retraction, rising inflation and inventory growth. "Last year, footwear imports grew by more than 33%, much more than North American retail in the period (+1.1%)," he adds.
